The Purple Cloud is written in a prose style clearly indicating its + year age, and I found it bloated, or maybe "florid" to be nicer.
Almost better than M.P. Shiel's book is John Sutherland's intro placing it in the stream of other last-man novels, This is one of those books that has a great premise (post-apocalypse, last man alive), but is /5. The Purple cloud is full of visionary suggestions but it is not made of only that.
